Threat Posed by Harmful Algal Blooms Demands Leaders Who Will Fight for Our Lakes

AUBURN, NY – Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have appeared on Owasco, Skaneateles, and Otisco Lakes. HABs, which are caused by nutrient runoff, occur when cyanobacteria grow at a rapid rate, producing toxins and cutting off oxygen supply. Due to increased nutrient loading and the impacts of climate change, HABs are occurring in the lakes earlier each year, endangering both people and wildlife and posing an existential threat to the water supply.

The Ian for Assembly team is making a significant ad buy to highlight Ian’s record as a champion for the Finger Lakes. Phillips is a member of the Owasco Watershed Lake Association, Skaneateles Lake Association, Otisco Lake Preservation Association and Save Owasco Now. Ian Phillips (D), candidate for State Assembly District 126, will prioritize combating the crisis posed by HABs by working with local groups, state actors, and water experts. The incumbent candidate, John Lemondes (R) of Lafayette, actively opposed the watershed rules and regulations created by experts and stakeholders in the Owasco Watershed region over a period of six years. We need an emergency investment by the state into reversing the impacts of runoff, watershed protections and upgrades to prevent further damage, and increased enforcement and penalties for polluters whose actions threaten our water and way of life. I will be a relentless champion for the Finger Lakes in the Assembly,” said Ian Phillips

The Finger Lakes needs state investment to fight these blooms and ensure the health of its lakes. Lemondes not only opposed the watershed rules and regulations, but he also voted against the budget that provided funding for the Finger Lakes-Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance. To celebrate our lakes, the Phillips campaign is holding a “Love Our Lakes Day” on August 23rd. On the shores of Owasco Lake, Phillips will speak alongside State Senator Rachel May and other advocates on the importance of protecting the lakes for generations to come.

The 126th Assembly District includes parts of Cayuga and Onondaga Counties. It is home to three Finger Lakes (Owasco, Otisco, and Skaneateles). The general election will take place on November 3, 2026.
